​Tenerife is divided into three areas – the Northern area, the Southern area and the Metropolitan area – which include a total of 31 municipalities. Two of the three most populated cities in the Canary Islands are in Tenerife: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island; and San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

In Tenerife, the climate is subtropical oceanic on the coast, that is, very mild and sunny most of the year, with little rainfall concentrated in the period from October to March. In inland areas, the climate varies with altitude and slope exposure: the slopes exposed to the northeast receive a moderate amount of rain and are green, while in the rest of the island the rainfall is scarce, usually below 250 millimeters (10 inches) per year on the coasts, and often even below 150 mm (6 in), which explains the aridity of the landscape on coasts and southern slopes..

Tenerife’s traditional food relies, above all else, on the sea. And not only because the dishes that feature on its restaurant menus and on the tables of its households are dominated by the fish and seafood found in the waters surrounding the Canary archipelago. The island’s cooking also looks towards the ocean in the sense that a great number of the ingredients it uses come from overseas. From the Iberian Peninsula, of course, but also from America. In fact, the links between Tenerife’s traditional food and Canarian cuisine in general with that of many South American countries are strikingly obvious.

Triangular in shape, the island would fit into a rectangle about 90 km wide by 80 km high and has a road perimeter of about 223 miles (358 km). It is dominated by Mount Teide, the volcano that stands at 12,198 feet high (3,718m), being the highest mountain of the Spanish territories. Fantastic views of this huge peak can be seen from many resorts on the island and from other Canary Islands. The volcanic landscape is out of this world and has been chosen as the backdrop to scenes in famous movies. Volcanic cones are distributed randomly over the whole island's surface and contribute to the amazing landscape.
